Low Anthropology...I really need to be saved.

I found in a review on Mockingbird (here) of Mark Galli's book God Wins, which is basically a response to Rob Bell's book Love Wins.   I haven't read either book yet, but I find the subject interesting because it touches on my experience with both Christians and those who have left Christianity or are on the fringes.  In general, too many in the church emphasize what we do as Christians and those who have left (often because of the demands of the 'do' people) emphasize the goodness of humans and a God who didn't have to die.  Even my experience in AA, which I will write about more later, in which the first thing we do is admit our powerlessness to choose what is right and that we need God to save us (low anthropology), tends to drift back into our own strength and ability to be good.  It's my own default tendency for sure.

I am interested in reading both books and I am sure I will buy them because I love buying books.  When I will read them...that is another story:)  I love the following quote and personally fall onto the side of low anthropology mostly because I have a memory and a mirror:)
“Isn’t that a choice, to trust in Christ? Yes and no…It is not my trust which reconciles God to me or me to God. It is the death and resurrection of Christ that reconcile God to me, and the faith empowered by the Holy Spirit that reconciles me to God…

And of course, we do not believe enough to be saved. Of course, selfishness rules our hearts in too many ways. Of course, we have doubts and confusion about God. It’s called sin. But the gospel calls us to stop looking at ourselves – at our doubts, our sins, and our choices. The Gospel says look to Christ…Faith includes a human response, but it isn’t the main point; the Savior is.”       Mark Galli  God Wins
